The very best goal of most musicians who use MySpace is to attract a record label. Earning a contract to record an album can be a musician way into the music business. But what can you do to attract record labels? Creating a profile page and uploading music is a good start, but by no means is it the end of your marketing effort s. Below you will find several suggestions on attracting a record label and getting them to take notice of your talent.

Music Marketing Tip#1: Upload a Variety of tunes

Just because you’ve to list the type of music you perform does not mean you’ve to upload tunes that only reflect that type of ! Show record labels and audiences that you’ve other musical interests by uploading tunes that are different from one another. This will demonstrate for you r range, ability to attract audiences from other type of s, which enhances your marketability, and prove to record labels you are value investing in.

Music Marketing Tip#2: Fuel the Fan Fires

Record labels conduct searches on MySpace everyday looking for skill ed performers. One way to get them to prohibit on your profile page is by showing them you have a strong fan base. The more individuals who visit your website, the more popular your page becomes there. Use the marketing tools available in order to obtain fan interest.

Record labels want to sign those who are already experienced in working crowds during shows and who have a strong Web presence because it makes promoting the music much easier. Having a strong fan base will make selling records and make promoting performance tours and other public appearances much easier.

Start a buzz on MySpace.com by attracting more listeners to your page. Join MySpace.com forums, list upcoming parties, and advertise your page on fliers, business cards, and other marketing materials as this will prompt listeners who have seen your live shows to visit and download your tunes.

Music Marketing Tip#3: Contacting Record Labels

Finding information about record labels is simple because of the Web. Instead of sending a copy of your latest compact disc or several of your tunes, you may send record labels the link to your MySpace profile page. Music executives will appreciate this much more than strange pieces of mail showing up at their offices. Sending a quick email with your contact information may be enough to get you noticed. Research record companies to see which ones cater to your type of, and which ones accept email from musicians.

Music Marketing Tip#4: Selling Your Album on MySpace

Houston-based art rockers Blue October will headline the inaugural PICK UP THE PHONE TOUR–where impassioned artists join together to raise awareness and funds for depression and suicide prevention–and Atlanta-based hip-hop artist and producer B.o.B will open on the trek.

The PICK UP THE PHONE TOUR marks the first-ever tour solely benefiting suicide prevention in history. The month-long trek will launch Thursday, October 22nd at the Music Farm in Charleston, SC and wrap up with a two-night stand at Stubbs in Austin, TX November 20 and 21. See the full PUTP tour itinerary below; tickets are on sale now. To purchase, visit: http://www.putp.org and http://www.blueoctoberfan.com/pickupthephone/.

The PICK UP THE PHONE TOUR will launch with a press conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC Wednesday, October 21 at 10:00 AM. Justin Furstenfeld, the lead singer of Blue October, will be on hand to speak and perform an acoustic set before members of Congress as well as supporters of the tour partners 1-800 SUICIDE, PostSecret and TWLOHA.

Justin–who has struggled with bi-polar disorder most of his life–will be calling on Congress to fund both creative writing and art therapy programs as alternative options for mental health. The press conference will also urge Congress to fully fund the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act which provides the funding behind the majority of the suicide prevention programs in the United States today. The press conference is open to all on a first-come first-served basis, to RSVP, email TWLOHA: PUTP@TWLOHA.com.

The PICK UP THE PHONE TOUR is created through a partnership between the non-profit organization To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA), the largest charity on MySpace and Facebook: Postsecret.com; Synclive.com; and 1-800 SUICIDE The National Hopeline Network.

Through 1-800 SUICIDE–which provides a life-saving service that is private and confidential for people in need–callers are routed directly to the closest crisis center in their immediate area so that quick referrals to behavioral health services and other supports can be offered. Since 1998, 1-800-SUICIDE has received over 3.6 million calls and rescued more than 4,000 individuals who had already initiated suicide plans.

The spokesperson for the PICK UP THE PHONE TOUR 2009, Justin Furstenfeld personally understands the struggles those who are affected by mental health issues face on a daily basis. “It has taken 20 years to have the chance to do a tour focusing on mental health issues which have been a daily battle for me for most of my life,” explains Justin.

“It’s great to finally be a part of a positive, progressive-thinking tour for an important cause which will make a direct impact and help people in desperate situations that need it the most.” In a strange turn of events in his own life, Justin worked at a mental hospital one day and, after suffering a breakdown, became a patient in a hospital the next.

Justin–who has taken medication for the condition since he was a teenager–now teaches creative writing at a mental hospital to young adults affected by mental health issues, self-abuse issues and sexual abuse. Through personal experiences and music, Justin challenges young minds to channel their emotions and anger into creative writing and art versus taking their frustrations out on themselves or the world around them.

He performs his art around the world, sending a message of hope to thousands who know and trust his message because he fights the same battles they fight every day. Justin is living proof that if you reach out and allow yourself to be helped you can lead a beautiful life filled with love, family and career.

“In moments of bravery and confusion and honesty, people turn to 1-800-SUICIDE–over three million of them,” points out Jamie Tworkowski, founder of To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA).

“The folks at the Hopeline Centers have been answering those calls for ten years, picking up the phone when it’s mattered most. Now to help those who will not pick up the phone, together with 1-800-SUICIDE we are launching the first 24×7 online emotional support network called AliveIM!, which will soon be available at www.suicide.net.”

To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA)–a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide–exists to encourage, inform and inspire and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery.

Since 2006, TWLOHA has responded to over 100,000 messages from people in over 40 different countries and have invested over half a million dollars directly into treatment and recovery, including $50,000 to help fund the AliveIM! support network.

In another innovative move, the tour has partnered with Synclive.com to air live performances from the artists via the Internet as well as provide an immediate online confidential connection for fans in need. Synclive.com will create an essential connection for concertgoers in crisis who are unable to approach a booth at the show in-person either for direct help or to volunteer for the online counseling program.

Formed in Houston in 1995, the rock five–piece Blue October have released five studio albums and sold over 2 million albums. The group released their fifth studio album Approaching Normal (Universal Motown), the follow-up to their 1.3 million-selling Foiled album; it spawned the hit “Hate Me,” which reached #2 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, followed by “Into the Ocean,” a # 1 video on VH1 about a the metaphorical contemplation of suicide itself.

Approaching Normal debuted at # 13 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart in March 2009 and produced two top singles: “Dirt Room,” which rocketed to #6 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart marking the group’s third Top Ten singl, and “Say It.”

Blue October is Justin Furstenfeld (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Jeremy Furstenfeld (drums, percussion), Ryan Delahoussaye (violin/viola, mandolin, piano, backing vocals), C.B. Hudson (lead guitar, backing vocals) and Matt Noveskey (bass guitar, backing vocals). Due to their hard-won and loyal fanbase, the group now tours all over the world.
Hailing from Atlanta, B.o.B. also known as Bobby Ray is a hotly-tipped hip-hop artist and producer who will release his debut album The Adventures of Bobby Ray via T.I.’s label Grand Hustle (Atlantic Records) in 2009. B.o.B. appeared on the covers of XXL and Vibe magazines as was hailed as part of “Hip-Hop’s class of ‘09” (XXL, 12/08).
About the National Hopeline Network 1-800 SUICIDE (784-2433) and the Kristin Brooks Hope Center (KBHC):
After losing his wife, Kristin Brooks to suicide in 1998, Reese Butler founded the Kristin Brooks Hope Center (KBHC), which created the National Hopeline Network 1-800 SUICIDE.

In 2000, Reese gained the support of the late Senator Paul Wellstone (D-MN), Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) and obtained more than seven million dollars to expand and support the National Hopeline Network which is comprised of 200 community crisis centers in 48 states.

Callers in crisis to 1800-SUICIDE are routed to the closest crisis center in their immediate area so that quick referrals to behavioral health services and other supports can be offered. Since 1998, 1-800-SUICIDE has received more than 3 million calls and rescued more than 4,000 individuals who had already initiated suicide plans. www.hopeline.com

About To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA):

In 2006, Jamie Tworkowski wrote a story, a glimpse into a friend’s life and her first steps to recovery from drug addiction, self-injury, and depression. The story, titled To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA), and t-shirts Tworkowski printed to help pay for his friend’s recovery, started a movement, not only within his local Orlando, FL community, but one that was swiftly embraced by people everywhere.

Realizing a strong need to bring these mental health issues to light, Jamie created TWLOHA–a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide–and enlisted bands such as Paramore, Thrice, Anberlin, Switchfoot, Bayside, The Almost to spread TWLOHA’s message.

Jamie and TWLOHA joined national and international touring bands spreading their message of hope before bands took the stage each night. In August 2007, MySpace awarded TWLOHA the winner of their “Impact Award” for “Community Building,” TWLOHA garnered the most votes in the history of the Impact Awards.

To Write Love on Her Arms began with one broken girl, one painful night; addiction, depression, self-injury. It is the realization of what life can be when people commit to meeting a need. “A friend of mine told me there is no such thing as suicide prevention. This is an attempt to prove him wrong, to say that love can change a life. We can hold back the darkness. Rescue is possible,” says Tworkowski. www.twloha.com

I have never been a large fan of country music but there is a song that Garth Brooks sings called ‘The River’ that has some substantially inspiring lyrics. Here is a portion of what the song says :

You know a dream is like a river, ever changing as it flows.

And a dreamer’s just a vessel that must follow where it goes.

Trying to learn from what has behind you and never knowing what has in store

makes each day a unending battle just to stay amidst the shores.

And I will sail my vessel ’til the river runs dry.

like a bird upon the wind, these waters are my sky.

I’llnever reach my destination if I never try,

So I will sail my vessel ’til the river runs dry.

Too a lot of times we stand aside and let the water slip away.

To what we put off ’til tomorrow has now become now.

So do not you sit upon the shore and say you’re satisfied.

Choose to opening the rapids and dare to dance the tides.

That final verse is where the majority individuals miss it. Do you have dreams that you haven’t dared to fulfill? You only have one life to live so make it the perfect life that you can. Do not let your dreams die or fade away because you were afraid to take a opening .

What’s it on the inside of you that you want to do but are afraid to do it because it’s outside of your comfort zone? Begin to pursue whatever that’s and do not prevent until you’re doing what you know you were created to do. Live your dreams, live your passions, and live a life that’s full and complete.

An interesting trend is currently occurring in country music radio: country singer names, first and final (sometimes middle), are being simplified. Garth Brooks is Garth. Reba McEntire is Reba. Willie Nelson is just Willie. After a song, radio DJ’s are reducing the names down to one.

It is possible it is a time-saving device; it is easier to say “That has been Willie with ‘Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain’.” Some may argue that the simplified name is because of country music’s “simple” fans. While some country music fans may embrace this label, others may find it offensive.

But may be dwindling names is a sign of respect for the artist. The musicians with only one name have gained a certain amount of regard in th music business. Toby Keith has become Toby. At times Brooks and Dunn is Kix and Ronnie ( it is not shorter but more respectful). Then of course the extensive names: Reba, Garth, Alan (or AJ), Willie, and so on. It gets trickier with names prefer George (George Strait or George Jones?) and Hank (junior or senior?). But even Hank is a number of times “Hank Junior” or “Hank Senior.” On the contrary, country singer names of newer musicians are al the majority always referred to in full.

Nonetheless another argument is the sense of comfort country music induces in its listeners. Perhaps deejays try to secure that by referring to the multi-million-dollar stars by their 1st names. They talk about Reba like she’s your sister and not a star you will never meet (this is reinforced by the reruns of her television show where she’s the mother next door). Radio has given these country singer names and some, like Reba, have embraced them, showing only the 1st name on posters, compact disc s, and even television shows.

And you recall uncle Garth instead of the optimum -selling musician of all time with enough resources to support his gran kids’s grand kids. This is the same guy who vary d the way artists negotiated contracts and got paid; this country singer names his price on anything. He became influential in the industry and bought a ample house and smashed thousand-dollar guitars on stage. But the radio makes you think you can call him up and talk about fishing two Sundays ago when you were eating fried chicken on the bank and did not get a bite. And do not forget his superstar wife, Trisha.

All in all, country musician names shortened seems to mean something. It is up to the individual to determine meaning, but disk jockeys had to have shortened them for a reason. Now, you have to wonder when the new country music singers’ names will dwindle down to one. Or might be you miss the Brooks, the McEntires, the Nelsons, the Williams. might be you want the final names back. And what about the singers with three names: Earl Thomas Connely, John Michael Montgomery. Do they lose radio time because they have long names?

Country music originated from the old folk music that the pioneers sang and played as they session tled across the country. They used wagon trains. That’s where a group of people drive their wagons across the country is a single file trying to go further west. At night they would gathering and the ones that may play fiddles, banjo, and guitars, would play and make up songs about their experiences on the trail.

Then came along people like the Carter family members and Jimmy Rodgers (the singing brakeman) and they came up with a newer style of country songs. Still everything was acoustical, no electrical instruments. When wannabe singers heard Jimmy Rodgers, they all wanted to sing like him. His singing had confidence and you could hear it.

The Grand ole Opry started wide casting in 1925. This let millions of individuals hear folk and country music all across the country. The Louisiana Hayride started in 1948 and a lot of singers got their start there. The radio shows made a lot of young children want to sing, and a lot of them did come on and make stars, each bringing a new style to country music. Recording businesses then did not want you to sound like somebody else, they want your sound. Assuming that they like d it you got a contract.

When Hank Williams was on the hayride, I had a nice friend playing for the hayride. He was playing when Hank had seven encores for lovesick blues. Then everybody wanted to sound like Hank Williams. Hank was top dog, then came Elvis to knock him off the mountain. Of course Hank had died before Elvis made it. Still Hank was on top after his death.

Every year country progresses to something new. Still there’s a lot of people that don’t progress with it. A lot still prefer the old traditional type of country. That is what makes the world go around.

If you are like me, you are wondering what happened to country music. The terrestrial radio stations today only performance the watered down pop mess. Country music used to be a force to reckon with. Let us get back to the good ol’ days!

Unless you’ve a satellite radio, you’re not going to hear real country music on the radio. Singers prefer Hank Williams III, Robbie Fulks, and Wayne Hancock just aren’t getting airplay. George Jones has been basic ally kicked out of the Country Music Awards several years ago for being too old. Once upon a time, I thought George Strait didn’t know how to choose a bad song. That has been before I heard some of his stuff from his latest album. I hate to say it, but George you let us down.

In Nashville (dubbed Trashville by Hank III), it is a matter of you do what we say or you do not get played on the radio. The performers ought to have more control of what they performance and record. After all, they are the ones going out every night and listening to the crowd’s reactions. The record company isn’t there to say, “Man, they love that steel guitar.”

The pop market has infiltrated country music. It started way back in the 1970’s. Country music started to decline when they allowed pop mixtures in. Some guys never got the respect they should ‘ve received. Billy Joe Shaver comes to mind. Today, you have people from all over the globe making country music in Nashville. Most of these singers wouldn’t know the difference between a steel guitar from a banjo. It sounds crazy, and it is!

Country music is promote d as, “This is not your grandpa’s music.” Well, it is not my music either. Many of the die hard country music buffs would agree. There is no soul, there’s no pain, and there’s no edge to today’s country music. Let’s get back to the day when the two step was the biggest thing since sliced bread.

Austin, Texas is celebrated as now’s country music capital of the world. There you will find Junior Brown, Bobby Bare, and Billy Joe Shaver. The new talent in Austin is excellent too! Heather Myles is a fantastic female performer carrying on the traditional sound. Nashville is losing face with the country base. Let’s get country music back to it’s roots. Call your Regional country radio disc jockey and request some of the classics. If enough people demand it to come back to it’s old ways, Nashville will have to take notice.
